KiCad symbol library
Export the solved pinout as a KiCad symbol library (.kicad_sym): one symbol for your part and package, with every assigned pin named after its signal.
Export it
- Solve the current requirements. The export needs a feasible result.
- Open Export in the top bar and choose Export KiCad symbol library.
- The current assignment is checked against the device’s pin rules by the independent checker before the file is written. The button reads “Validating KiCad export…” while it runs.
If the check fails, or the project changes while it runs, nothing is downloaded and the Export popover says why. Solve again and export again.
What’s in the symbol
- Every package pin, in pin-number order, on two columns.
- Assigned pins are named with the name you gave the signal, or the signal’s name if you gave none. The hardware pin name (for example
PA2) is kept as an alternate pin name. - Unassigned pins keep their hardware name.
- Spaces become underscores, the same way KiCad treats them on load.
- Electrical types: supply and ground pins are power inputs, unconnected pads are no-connect, and signal pins are left unspecified, because the device data has no signal direction.
Use it in KiCad
- In KiCad, open Preferences → Manage Symbol Libraries and add the file.
- Place the symbol in your schematic.
- Assign a footprint. The export leaves the Footprint field empty.
- Review the electrical types before relying on ERC.
The file uses the KiCad 6 library format, which KiCad 6 and later open.
Limits
- The export is a snapshot. When the pinout changes, export again and replace the library. Keeping symbols in step automatically is the KiCad plugin, which isn’t built yet.
- No footprint and no signal directions are included.
